The Senate Appropriations Committee has assigned the Department of Agriculture to create an industrial hemp seed bank with a $500,000 fund. With cannabis being classified as a schedule 1 substance, all previous genetic material had been destroyed by the federal government creating a serious lack of resources and, in turn, hinderingscientistsability to research and study the benefits and the farmer's ability to grow the hemp plant. The committee has also deemed it necessary for the Department of Agriculture topublicize hemp researcher’s eligibility for federal grants as well as the ARS (Agricultural Research Service) to establish and maintain a hemp germplasm repository at the Plant Genetics Research Unit. It is important to have these programs in place in order to continue to grow the industry. Having access to high-quality seeds will further the expansion of knowledge of hemp genetics and offer researches and farmers insight on how to create and maintain top tier products to the end user.
