It’s easy to understand why people are turning to sleep aids before hitting the hay. Our fast-paced, work-focussed, caffeine-laden lifestyles don’t really leave room for blissful nights of rest. According to a recent nationally representative CR survey of 1,267 U.S. adults, around 80 percent of Americans said they have trouble sleeping at least once a week. Thankfully, CBD is a naturally occurring compound that can help you get those zzz's without the nasty side effects.

The Ugly Truth Behind Conventional Sleep Aids

When you can’t sleep, we know that desperate times call for desperate measures. Unfortunately, when you reach for conventional sleep aids, such as prescription and over-the-counter medications, risky side effects can occur. For instance, ZZZquil has a number of side effects such asdizziness, drowsiness, loss of coordination, dry mouth, nose, or throat, constipation, upset stomach, dry eyes, blurred vision, day-time drowsiness or a "hangover" feeling after night-time use. What’s more, is that sleeping aids such as ZZZquil are habit-forming and can be very addictive, especially prescription medications like Ambien andLunesta.

Chill Out with CBD

CBD can be a great alternative to traditional sleep aids, as it is safe, non-habit forming, and does not have severe side-effects. CBD (cannabidiol) interacts with our body’s natural endocannabinoid system, which helps keep our body in homeostasis. One of the ways CBD can positively help our bodies is by reducing anxiety, which in turn, has the possibility of alleviating insomnia and improving sleep quality.

The Research

While research about CBD and its effects on sleep is still in the works, some recent studies have shown possible promising findings. Joseph Maroon, an M.D, clinical professor, and neurosurgeon at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center has researched the effects of cannabis on the brain. From his research, Maroon found that CBD appears to ease anxiety and pain, which can make it more challenging to fall and stay asleep.

Additionally, according to a 2017 review of sleep and cannabis in the  Current Psychiatry Reports, research suggests that CBD may also affect sleep directly. This study shows that CBD can interact with receptors in the brain that govern the body’s daily sleep/wake cycles.CBD could actually reduce some of the time spent in REM sleep, which means that people who take it, may not remeber their dreams. This is OK, however, as those who are dreamless often have a better quality of sleep.

How Much CBD Should I Take Before Bed?

Everyone reacts to CBD differently and needs a different dosage. With that said, there isn’t a standard amount of CBD one should take before bed. You will probably need more than 10mg to feel any noticeable effects but some individuals may need between 20 and 30mg or more. Of course, before you try CBD, be sure to talk to your doctor to make sure CBD will not interact with any medications that you are taking.
