Hemp acquired attention from across the world through the wonderful health benefits it is capable of delivering. Studies across the world aim to understand the true potential of this plant and harness the same. This would be a revolution in the field of medical science that so many are looking forward to. The interesting feature about hemp is that it has the power to attend to even the most common problems such as PMS. Menstrual cycles are physical as well as a psychological struggle for women every month. Headaches, mood swings, cramps etc, are common symptoms that occur during this time of the month and the type of relief for these needs to have few or no side effects. This is one of the reasons why hemp is a powerful ingredient to treat PMS symptoms.

CBD and PMS

CBD is an active cannabinoid present in hemp which is responsible for the various health benefits that are associated with the plant. The use of hemp for treating PMS dates back to 16th-century Chinese medical texts according to a review shared in 2002.  And nowadays,

Hemp was used as a medicine to cure period cramps and menstrual pain according to the scripts. Given there is very few research ongoing towards women health, the knowledge of using marijuana to cure PMS symptoms comes from general research.

CBD oil has been an active part of pain relief for both acute as well as chronic cases such as arthritis. By taking advantage of the same effect conclusions suggesting that hemp can be effective against menstrual cramp pains is possible. A study conducted in 2017 concludes on the similar lines where CBD can help reduce the emotional effects of pain. Clearing your mind with CBD has been proven beneficial as it is a powerful ingredient in providing relief for headaches, backaches etc, which are also other associated symptoms of PMS. Being a powerful antioxidant, CBD has anti-inflammatory properties that will help treat various other symptoms related to this time of the month. A study published in The Journal of Clinical Investigations suggests that these anti-inflammatory properties can even help prevent acne. CBD oils, balms, and creams are available in the market today for use on the skin to treat acne.

Gastrointestinal treatment

Other common problems associated with PMS is bloating, nausea and constipation. CBD oil can help treat stomach queasiness especially related to chemotherapy as per the study conducted in 2011. This could be useful for women experiencing nausea before menstrual cycles.

Mood Swings and Sleep

Mood swings are the most common symptom associated with PMS. Hormonal imbalance in the body during this period is the reason behind the same. CBD is often related to the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders. Various studies on the treatment of depression have shown positive effects after usage of CBD oil from black diamond strain. Unlike THC which is psychoactive, CBD is a mild compound that can help treat these symptoms effectively without causing any side effects.

CBD is also often suggested for people suffering from insomnia and other sleep disorders. Having quality sleep is important for the body to function efficiently. A common problem associated with PMS is lack of quality sleep which might affect the mood or cause fatigue in the daytime. A study in 2013 using rats as subjects helped prove that CBD oil can increase the sleep timing. This is a suggestive evidence supporting the effectiveness of CBD oil to treat insomnia and enhance sleep quality. This benefit could be particularly useful during the menstrual cycle.

Currently, various hemp-based products are entering the market with the aim of controlling PMS symptoms. While hemp-derived products such as CBD oils show promising results. Consuming hemp seeds is also considered an effective way of treating certain symptoms of PMS. But there is no scientific research that backs up this claim yet.

But users across the globe have shared encouraging results so far. In general, CBD counters a huge disadvantage of over the counter medicine. It is natural and has hardly any side effects compared to these medicines. It protects the body from exposure to man-made chemicals and toxins which can have negative side effects in the future. With more research to support the various possibilities, CBD could enter as a potential way of treating the various symptoms associated with PMS naturally.
