The Green New Deal proposed by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a framework that prioritizes climate change action by setting a goal of carbon neutrality in the United States by 2050. As a country, the United States is disproportionately responsible for 20% of the worlds Greenhouse Gas emissions which means we have, without a doubt, a huge responsibility for getting our act together to reduce these emissions and address the climate crisis. The Green New Deal is directed at eliminating fossil-fuel use and switching 100% of the country’s energy resources to renewable, zero-emission resources. It also presents other goals that are highlighted in NPR’s article “Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Releases Green New Deal Outline”

    • Upgrading all existing buildings in the country to being energy efficient
    • Working with farmers "to eliminate pollution and greenhouse gas emissions ... as much as is technologically feasible" (while supporting family farms and promoting "universal access to healthy food")
    • "Overhauling transportation systems" to reduce emissions — including expanding electric car manufacturing, building "charging stations everywhere," and expanding high-speed rail to "a scale where air travel stops becoming necessary"
    • A guaranteed job with a "family-sustaining wage, adequate family and medical leave" and "paid vacations and retirement security" for every American
    • "High-quality health care" for all Americans

Critics of the Green New Deal deem it as impossible. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez believes it is an opportunity to “rediscover the power of public imagination” she tells NPR. She’s right. It is about time we start imagining a future that includes equity and justice for all.
