UC Davis, renowned for its agricultural university, has partnered with a biotechnology company, Front Range Bioscience, out of Colorado to further research and better understand the medical and pharmaceutical benefits of the hemp plant. Front Range Bioscience will be responsible for isolating the plants DNA and then shipping the samples to Davis who will then use its state-of-the-art sequencing and analysis to create a better genome reference for hemp. As well, thanks to the 2014 Farm Bill, which allows for the cultivation and research of hemp, there will be little to no federal oversight, as there is with cannabis research, allowing for greater efficiency and a more seamless process. The end goal of the project is to eventually be able to use the genetic research provided by UC, Davis to cultivate new breeds of hemp with specific structural properties to better suit the needs of the industry.
