How to Make Exercising a Habit

How to Make Exercising a Habit

Of course in theory, everyone wants to have some sort of exercise routine implemented into their daily lives. Although it isn’t too difficult to create and begin one, it is difficult to actually stick with it. At first it seems like a fun thing to do and you initially have the motivation to make a healthy impact in your life. However, as time moves on we might get busy with other things in our lives or get discouraged by the lack of results and tend to give up. Here are some ways that might make it a little bit easier for you to start and stick to a healthy workout plan.

Choose an activity you like to do:

A lot of people tend to have specific perceptions of what exercise has to be. Take into consideration that there are plenty of other ways to get good exercise aside from going to the gym to lift or run on a treadmill. These can obviously be great ways to burn some calories, but for many people, this is boring and difficult work. Try to find something that you have liked to do all your life. Whether it be go for a hike in the mountains or play a sport you’ve always liked, these are great ways to get exercise!

Get a partner:

Finding a friend to work out with can be extremely beneficial in your pursuit of an consistent exercise habit. By having another person, you can use each other as motivation to stick to your plan. Say you have a person that you go lifting with or a daily walk with, you can plan a time to meet and use each other as a reason to go. No one wants to let their friends down if they committed to plans with them, so this is a way to make sure you stick to your word.

Vary your routine:

By switching up the activities you are doing for exercise, you will be a lot less likely to bored or injured. Try walking for a day, then biking, then perhaps take a hike. As long as you have some sort of variety, it will keep you engaged in your workout plan much more. Try to think outside the box a little bit as well. For example, doing yard work around the house one day can be a great way to exercise. Try going to a swim or dancing to some music. There are so many different things that you can do, so change it up a bit!

Choose a comfortable time of day:

Finding the right time of day to get some exercise can be very important. You’re going to want to try and avoid doing anything when it is too hot or too cold. It’s never any fun doing anything in extreme weather conditions and this will only deter you from doing it in the future. Early morning or later in the day are ideal times to get some work in because the weather tends to be more forgiving. Once you find a time of day that works for you, it will help create a routine that you are more likely to follow on a day to day basis.

Don’t get discouraged:

Believe it or not, to get in shape or to even stay in shape takes a lot of hard work! Don’t be discouraged when you are not seeing immediate results. It takes months to start seeing a return on your input and make sure you know that. People think that once they start working out, they’ll morph into a new person, but it takes time! Commit to the hard work and I promise you will get to the place you want to be.

Make exercise fun:

There are plenty of ways to keep yourself entertained while you are putting in some exercise. You can listen to music, read, or watch tv all while ride a stationary bike or run on a treadmill for example. Be creative. Exercise doesn’t need to be the boring thing that no one wants to do. You can go on scenic hikes, play sports, visit an attraction to walk around, the possibilities are endless. Spice it up a little and have some fun!
