Turmeric is most commonly known as a spice used frequently in Indian cuisine. However, turmeric is quickly becoming known for all the health benefits it has to offer. It has long been a staple in east-Asian culture to not only use for cooking, but health reasons as well.
It is considered to be one of the most powerful herbs on the planet at fighting and potentially reversing disease. There have been over 6,000 peer-reviewed articles published regarding the health benefits that turmeric (or curcumin, main part of turmeric) has to offer. One of the most fascinating common trends among these articles is that many researchers have put turmeric up to par with certain prescription drugs or even better!
Studies have shown that turmeric can be used as an anti-coagulent, which is commonly known as aspirin or ibuprofen. However, ibuprofen overdose is quite common and can lead to excessive bleeding and hemorrhage which is very serious. The benefit of turmeric is that there are no known side effects unless taken in excessive amounts. This will help alleviate people’s dependence of over the counter pills, which have become a major problem within the United States.
Believe it or not, there have been tests on laboratory animals that curcumin can have a positive effect on depression. To examine this revelation further, a research team took 60 volunteers with major depressive disorder (MDD), and split the them into three separate groups. One group would be treated with curcumin, another with fluoxetine (Prozac), and the last with a combination of both. The results were astounding; not only did all the patients respond well to the curcumin, but it was just as effective as the Prozac.
Curmcumin also plays a role as an anti-inflamatory. Inflammation is actually very important to our body’s health. Without short-term inflammation, it would leave our body susceptible to foreign bacteria that could potentially kill us. However, even though short-term inflammation can help us fight many diseases and cancers, in the long-term it can affect the body in a negative manner. Therefore, it is important to be ingesting things like turmeric in order to make sure you do not develop long-term inflammation. It has been suggested by scientists that curcumin is such a powerful anti-inflammatory that is just as effective as pharmaceutical drugs, but without the side effects.
On top of all these very important benefits, turmeric can affect your life on a day by day basis as well. A controlled test involving turmeric and a placebo has been shown that turmeric has a positive impact on a person’s mood. Scientists believe that turmeric can help lead to a more balanced mood overall. There have been multiple studies showing that turmeric can help heal wounds faster. It was noted that people who were ingesting turmeric saw that their wounds were reducing in redness and swelling. Turmeric can work as an immediate-type remedy such as advil, tylenol, etc. without the side effects.
